5MM_PER_HOUR

                                             May 27, 2012

How not to tell a story:
   "5cm Per Second".

   Basic, low-level confusion throughout:
"Are they exchanging letters, or is
he not responding... or barely responding?
Is he always writing un-sent texts, or
is he just not sending some of his texts?
Once out of college, why did they not
meet again? Does he feel that she blew
him off ("our hearts have not moved
together 1 cm"). Oh, does he live near
her now? Oh no, this is a *different* girl.
   With the same face.

There may be an interesting kernel of
an idea here: they put their lives on
hold, postponing them for a re-union
         that can't happen, because the
thirteen-year old kids they used to
         be can never meet again.

I say may be, because it's not
clear what the idea is, really.

      Lots of really pretty pictures
and draaaaama, and it all ends
      up barely watchable, and that
      just once.

      I would call this "pretentious"
      except sometimes I like things
      that are pretentious.

In some ways reminiscent of of they
"Grave of the Fireflies": An attempt at But at least
doing something *serious* with anime, "Fireflies"
and ending up with a Slow, shapeless, was coherent.
               "tragedy", that's all very impressive...
but what about that re-release of "The
               Dirty Pair", anyway?
