ANGOLMOIS

                                             October 24, 2018

"Angolmois Genkou Kassenki" aka
"Angolmois: Record of Mongol Invasion"

The war story "Angolmois Genkou Kassenki", is
about resisting the Mongol invasion of Japan in
the 1200s, in the early samurai era (everyone
comments that the hero fights in the "Ginkei-style").

There are quite a few good little things
scattered throughout this story, like in
the early stages every different Mongol
attack seems to be by people of completely
different cultures-- different armor,
weapons, fighting-style... the main
character looks them over, speculating that
they probably have different generals and
may even speak different languages.

There are also quite a few bits of utter crap,
presumably dictated by someone's perception of
genre conventions-- e.g. a really big guy
who's so tough he stops an arrow with his
teeth, and as we near the tragic finish
there's lots of scenes of slow, sad dramatic
dialog on the battlefield in the middle of
emergency situations.

Our hero's great epiphany at the end, where
he presents his philosophy of war is either
ridiculous or horrible, according to taste--
you see it's not about fighting for someone,
or defending a country or anything like that,
he's fighting his *own* war. Just like
everyone else!
