    shifted around in                   From the Greek word, 
    meaning.                            autos, meaning self.
                                                            
       Self-determined,                        Remarkably similar
       as in autonomous,                       to the American 
       turns into works-                       definition.  
       without-direct-                             
       human-control, as                           
       in automatic.

          So we think of
          automatons as
          things which are
          not autonomous.
