BUTCHERS_BILL

                                              October 13, 2004

A coal plant emits fumes that we
all know will kill people, and it
is justified by the profit made on
the deal no more than a hit-man is
justified because someone is
willing to pay him.

We might hope that the social
benefit of having the coal plant in
operation outweighs the deaths it
will cause (the power it generates
might even save lives on balance),
but no one who uses the power they
buy from the plant needs to submit
to that standard.

You get to run the TV and the stereo
all you want if you're willing to pay
the bill.

            The butcher's bill is
            never presented to you.
