DISTANT_GUNSHOTS

As I was writing some of this stuff,
I inserted an aside about what was         GUNS
going on at the time:

    distant gunshots:  Sat Feb 23 22:33:19 2013

What's funny is that this wasn't intended
to be a relevant comment of any sort, it
was just a habit I have from having read
too many mystery novels: when I hear a noise
outside I often make note of the time in
case anyone asks me for evidence later.

   The sound of gunshots is a common
   (though not frequent) occurence in the
   neighborhood I live in these days--
   West Oakland, not too far from some big
   housing projects.

   It's not unusual for these guys to
   empty a clip at each other, though they
   don't appear to actually hit anyone
   very often... I presume it's typically
   something like "sending a message"
   if it's not just "fooling around".
