DUKING

                                             August 07, 2015

There's a David Bowie interview from 1977
called "the unaired interview". It's
up on youtube at present.

In this one he's doing a return-to-normalcy act,
talking about how throughout his early career he
was acting out different characters, and trying
to stay in character even during interviews.

He talks about how giving dozens of interviews
where repeatedly answering the same questions
produced a temptation to start answering the
questions in a different way.

He would -- he said -- read things in the
newspaper that claimed he had said things he
had never said, and then he would adopt it, he
would repeat it in other interviews just to
see what would happen.

The neo-fascist business
is here treated as one of I associate this with the Thin
those things made up by White Duke, though I'm pretty sure
someone else and adopted he commented at one point that it
by him. went back further than that, to the
                             lightning bolt of Aladdin Sane.
   There's also a
suggestion that he There's also an old line
   was playing up a that's suggestive: "I'm
social observation living proof of Churchill's
about the direction lies", from "Quicksand" on
England was going, in "Hunky Dory".
   order to heighten
   awareness about it.

                                                 VORTEX

So: this is all very reasonable,
     but he remains a ridiculously
     slippery character. Why believe
this interview and not one of the
     thousands of other interviews?
