EVASIVE_MANEUVERS

Throughout "Macross 7", many characters
are using an implicit "if you've gotta SEVEN_NOT_PLUS
ask, you're never gonna know" philosophy.

When asked a direct question, they often
make neutral, evasive comments, grunt
noncomittally or smile mysteriously, etc.

This is both:

 (1) often a reasonable policy for
dealing with people -- if you
     try to explain yourself, you're
     giving them too much material
to work with, and you're likely
to end up quibbling over trivia.

It really is often better to
just provide a few hints, and
let them work it out for
     themselves.

 (2) Convenient for controlling the
     dramatic pacing... if Basara
     were inclined to lecture about
his philosophy we would find out
too much too soon. Better to
watch him in action and try to
     infer what he's doing.

        Really, he makes comments early
on that make it pretty clear.
If you come in in the middle,
it can be a little harder to
get -- which is an argument
for coming in in the middle.

 (3) The philosophical premises would sound
     pretty silly if stated baldly.

     (a) that fact that they are this silly
makes it possible to infer them pretty
easily -- so why not let people infer
     them?
