  The anime "Macross Plus" shows
  a clear influence from the film
  "Top Gun".

  There's nothing terribly remarkable
  about that: "Top Gun" was a
  well-promoted, widely known movie,
  and even a less imitative form than
  anime might easily pick up on it.


     What seems peculiar to me is that
     *I've seen this film*: I don't take
     the trouble to see very many            I suppose the mid-90s was a
     Hollywood releases.                     time when I was watching more
                                             than usual, but even so...



     This happens to me often enough-- I've seen
     the *one* thing I need to see to catch the
     reference-- that I wonder what's going on.

        I have a knack for seeing
        things that are influential?

        Could there be a torrent of references I
        don't follow, but don't realize that I'm       I was describing
        missing them?                                  "Ouran Host Club"
                                                       to the Sunfish,
        Perhaps I'm completely delusional, and         and she commented
        project my tiny store of knowledge onto        it was like "Beverly
        everything I see?                              Hills 90210".  That
                                                       could be one I missed.
