The original Brian Wilson lyrics to "I Know There's An Answer"
were "Hang on to Your Ego". They're a bit hard for me to follow:

I know so many people who think they can do it alone
They isolate their heads and stay in their saftey zones

Now what can you tell them
And what can you say that won't make them defensive

   Hang on to your ego
Hang on, but I know that you're gonna lose the fight

They come on like their peaceful
   But inside they're so uptight
   They trip through the day
And waste all their thoughts at night

Now how can I say it
And how can I come on
   When I know I'm guilty

   Hang on to your ego
Hang on, but I know that you're gonna lose the fight

Now how can I say it
And how can I come on
   When I know I'm guilty

So hang on to your ego
Hang on, but I know that you're gonna lose the fight

                                                          THE_CAGED_SELF
There's something here about isolation
(no man is an island)...

Is it a reference to LSD culture?

There was an old line by Timothy Leary
about ego death...

     From "The Psychedelic Experience" (1964)
by Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert, and Ralph Metzner:

"With your ego left behind you,
        the brain can't go wrong."
