HIP_REDUCTION

                                                          September 5, 2005

On one occasion, Sun Ra is reported
to have had the Arkestra listen to
some recent pop records:

  "This is some really
   hokey shit, Sonny"

  "This hokey shit
   is someone's
   hopes and dreams.
   Don't be so hip!"

One of the reviews of "The Immortal Class"
complains about some of the anecdotes being That made me
like Boy's Life fiction... think that maybe
                                                  I should look up
                                                  some old copies
                                                  of Boys Life.
In "Don Quixote", I notice that
when Cervantes stops trying to be
all superior to the Romantic and
   writes something conventionally QUIXAND
   romantic -- i.e. a boy-meets-girl
story -- the book gets much more
   readable.

                                                    ANNA_KARENINA
          Similarly, the adulterous adventures
of Anna Karenina are a total yawner,
          but Levin-and-Kitty works in spite
of the absence of the conflict which
is supposed to be necessary for fiction.

                                 Note, "The Thin Man" movies:
                                 remarkable for being a rare
                                 example of a husband and
                                 wife team that actually
                                 likes each other.

  Maybe we keep
  missing the
  obvious...
