KYONISM

                                                      MELANCOLY

If the universe of "The Melancoly of Haruhi Suzimiya"
is dancing to the strings of any one character, it
would not appear to be the perpetually dissatisfied
Haruhi, but rather the perpetually complaining male
viewpoint character, who we know only by by the With the exception
knickname "Kyon" (unlike all the other characters, of Kyon's "little
who have full names). sister", I guess, for
                                                         whom we have no
The stand-offish, famously untouchable Haruhi name at all.
opens up to him immediately when he begins to
talk to her; the all-powerful Nagato awaits his
approval and invariably takes his suggestions;
the "moe girl" waits on him, dressing up in a
cosplay maid outfit and serving him tea every
afternoon... and Koizumi, the other male figure
in their club turns out to be gay, which means
that Kyon is the focus of the attentions of
*everyone* on the scene.

All of the members of The Brigade treat him as
confidante, they behave as though he's the real The other guys in the
leader. school clearly regard
                                                      Kyon's life with a barely
There are repeated suggestions that there's concealed envy. They're
something odd about Kyon. He's supposed to still struggling to learn
be Mister Normal, but if so, what's he how to talk to girls,
*doing* on the scene, why was he pulled into while he's hanging out
Haruhi's orbit along with the three very weird with beautiful women who
club members? Further, he has a remarkable randomly lounge around in
ability to accept and accomodate any amount playboy bunny suits and
of strangeness... maid outfits.

So then, it's entirely possible
that the story is really about an
all-powerful Kyon unconsciously
using Haruhi as a blind: she
provokes him to do interesting There are other logical possiblities
things, but let's him act as though (that have less potential to work as
he's too cool to really care about story twists):
any of this stuff. He complains
about being dragged into things, Nagato may really be running
but if he really hates it that the show, using Haruhi and
much, why does he go along with it? Kyon as a double-blind to keep
                                             the other two factions confused.

Note the beginning sequence of each
episode: Haruhi looks bored, looking up
at the sky, suddenly her face is filled
with delight, and she touches the finger (or some other
of God reaching down to her. cosmic entity?)

The name "Kyon" is apparently a cutsey
contraction of the phrase for "big brother".
In the context of the story, Kyon's little
sister bestowed the name on him, and
somehow this has become the name everyone Kyon =
       calls him. Big Brother...
                                                            = God?

   I thought about it, and
   decided that my Great Insight
   here was really pretty obvious
if you thought about it at (Consider the
all. Someone else out there second season's It turns out there's
must've caught on to this..... "endless 8", another fan-theory
                                     where summer about an additional,
                                     refuses to end unrelated twist:
until Kyon has Miss Asashina the time
a chance to traveler who Kyon
                                     finish his finds so fascinating
And so I did a websearch on: summer may very well turn
                                     homework.) out to be the
"Kyon is God" grown-up form of his
                                                          younger sister.
And yes, this is indeed a
common interpretation. In which case, Asashina's
                                                sometimes quite
At least among us, flirtatious behavior seems
   the "Kyonists". a bit out-of-character.
                                                But late-period otaku culture
                                                appears to revel in these
                                                perverted touches, so
                                                maybe they'll go for it.
