   The post-web world is heavily
   linked, the pre-web world less so.

   As you go exploring through a chain of
   cultural associations, when you attempt
   to step backwards in time before the web
   barrier, there are only limited chains
   you can follow.  Tracks reinforced
   by academic cannon or an active fan base.

        Many things are obscured by the barrier...

                                               You might compare this
                                               to the way only the
                                               post-literate world is
                                               (literally) covered by
                                               history.  We have some
                                               knowledge of the
                                               pre-literate world, but
                                               it's comparatively sketchy.
