MOVING_REVIEWS

I wrote a review of "American Beauty" AMERICANBEAUTY
a few days after seeing the movie. It
was still echoing around in my head,
and yet I couldn't remember the names
of any of the characters or the
actors, or the writer or director.

I could look these up and insert
them... but wouldn't that assume
that the reader has a better memory
than I do? Wouldn't I need to
insert extra verbiage like:
the Dad character who tells the
story (and is fated to die in the end)
is named "blah" and is played by
"bleh".

So instead, I try to use
functional names for the
characters. But this presumes
that the reader shares my
impression of the character's
functions... who's The Hero,
who's the Protagonist, who's
the Viewpoint character...

I've cleaned this up as best I can,
tried to make it clearer.

But I'm not going to look up character
names and actor names for you.
You can get that from anywhere.

However what I will do is list the
name of the writer, a detail that few
ever seem to pay attention to:

   Written by
   Alan Ball

And maybe that's not a bad policy
for movie reviews.
