NATURAL_MISTAKE

Pontificating about what life was like
in the state of nature, and comparing
it to our present elevated or enervated
state is a time-honored practice of
  wonky intellectual thought-- it's
really too bad we haven't gotten better
  at it by now.

Wouldn't you think it would be
      standard practice to stop and
think things like "could it be
that my view of nature is
      excessively romanticized?"

      Or alternately "Am I mistaking
      pessimism for 'being realistic'?"

      Or even: "Are there other
      interpretations that would
also cover what data I have?"

Or even: "Do I *have* any data?"
