NEW_YEAR_VOID

                                             April 15, 2014

The New Year's Eve custom creates an
  interesting void in the calendar...
one is *expected* to be indulging
in a nasty chemical binge that's going
to leave you incapacitated on the
following day, so that day is a holiday That's an interesting
  of necessity-- phenomena in itself:
                                                 it's not a religious or
But since few people of any sense political observance of
have much interest in New Years any sort. Is it the
Eve, there's a large number of only such American
alert, intelligent individuals holiday? Not even
with a free day to play with. Halloween is an
                                                 official day-off...
There are a few events that make
use of this, but very few... I suppose the Thanksgiving
                                                     nationalistic overlay on
      ST_MARKS_CHURCH the harvest celebration is
                                                     lighter than it might be.
I've often toyed with the idea
of trying to do something like
a west coast version of the
         Poetry Project event, though my
my idea was to invert the
         ratio of music and words...
it would be a marathon of
         performance of contemplative,
         ambient music of various sorts,
         with some touches of poetry
         and song, where people would
be encouraged to come and go,
         hang around, work on different
         things...

             But at the moment,
             I have no venue
             in mind for it.
