NOVELTY_AGAIN

                                      February 2, 2005

It's not a new thought:
"maybe novelty is overrated".

I come back to it over And I think it's
and over again. a quotation of
                                  someone else's
                                  thought...
   So:
                                            TOADKEEPER
   Anything that really
   resonates is to be
   distrusted: Maybe it anti-romantic.
   isn't really New? anti-dionsysian

          NULL_HINGED
                                 Is this entirely sane?

                                      How can a people
                                      live like this?

                             Something that was in
                             the air back in the
                             intellectual world of
                             the seventies:

                             They liked to talk about
                             raising consciousness, and
they didn't care if it was Or false
                             self-consciousness. consciousness?

                                      FLIRT

Maybe this is just another
one of those cycles.

Every so often someone will
insist that it's time for Sometimes I speculate this may
everything to be New again. happen again, and I use clumsy
                                 expressions like "a new 'sixties'
                                 may soon be upon us".

But it goes back further than
                                 the sixties... the original
                                 "Romantic" movement was the
                                 literary and artistic arm of
                                 the political changes
                                 following the French Revolution.

   The revolution: Dionysian abandon,
   instinctive, passionate action.

   The new regime:
   Rigid, narrow intellectual doctrines.
   Apollo's golden manacles.

                                            (And that is certainly no
                                             new phrase, either. Where
did I lift that one from?)
