Note to a friend about Theodore Sturgeon:

As to his being condescending... well yeah,
sure. Just look at some of the names of the
places he was selling some of his stories:
            "Beyond Fantasy Fiction"; "Thrilling
Wonder"... Many of the original publications
were in places a little classier than that
("Galaxy" and "Unknown" for example), but
even so, how could he possibly escape the
fear that he was going over the head of the
            audience?

But at a guess, he didn't really *want* to
be condescending, he wanted to do it all; he
wanted to tie it all together: to write
simple plain tales with astounding depth
that would irrevocably transform any who
            read them.
