I have an objection to a Bryan Burrough remark
in the book "Days of Rage":

"They were like hundreds of thousands of
young Americans that season, one part
    aimless, druggy, and hedonistic, two
    parts angry, idealistic, and determined
to right all the wrongs they saw in 1969
    America: racism, repression, police
    brutality the war."

The idea that there are two, disconnected
parts, the idealistic and the hedonistic
does not sound quite right to me.

There was an idea going around that this was all
connected-- the trouble with the Nixon's and the
Kissinger's of the world is that they were
repressed. If only they'd get out to a few
drug-fueled orgies, they'd get over their obsession
with war and death.

Guys who never have any fun want to make sure that
no one else has any fun either.

          This particular deranged variant of
          Freudianism (if that's not redundant)
was actually fairly common in those days.

The young "exotic dancers" of the O'Farrell
Theater were often idealists with hopes had
hopes that their sex shows might have some
positive effect on the world beyond just
          paying their bills.
