I'm not really up on "popular music"...

I don't even really understand how you
would determine what's "popular".

   I've consulted the obvious sources, doing
   searches on phrases like "top-40",
   but it doesn't seem like they're addressing
   the problem:

   What is popularity?  How do you measure it?

   When I was a kid, the Top-40 listing was
   based largely on sales of singles.             Even back then, we all knew
