TOYNBEE

                                             July 16, 2010

Arnold J. Toybee, "A Study of History"

This fellow has a reputation as a
  follower of Oswald Spengler, but
Not As Crazy... so I had some hopes
he might not be a complete charlatan
  or madman.

But ye gods, what a pompous fool.

"And now, having explored the extension of
our Western Society in space, we have to
consider its extension in time; and we are
at once confronted with the fact that we
cannot know its future-- a limitation
which greatly resticts the amount of light
that the study of this particular society,
or of any of the still extant societies,
can throw on the nature of the species to
which these societies belong. We must
content ourselves with the exploration of
      our Western Society's beginnings."

                                     UNLIKELY_PLACES

  This "groping for enlightment in
unlikely places" can be rough work.
                                              (Speaking of
                                              pompous fools...)
