Even if I'm wrong about everything on nuclear power....

o let's say when solar and wind really get going it can do
it all and we won't need nuclear to solve global warming

o let's say building new nuclear capacity is very expensive,
and there's no way to fix this.

o let's say nuclear power really is very dangerous, and the
data on the industry's overall safety record is wrong

o let's say nuclear waste really is a tremendous technical
problem, and not something that can wait for us to do the
    obvious things

Even if I'm wrong about all that stuff:

Closing down existing, safely operating nuclear power plants
*before* we have clean energy to replace it with is stupid.
I mean, *obviously* stupid.

Just looking at the recent history of moves
like this: anywhere nuclear capacity has been
shut down has ended up increasing it's carbon (Actually, Germany's didn't
footprint-- Japan, Germany, the state of New technically *increase*, it
Hampshire... went flat when it would've
                                                 decreased otherwise.)
And California is getting ready to
add it's name to the list, closing
   the Diablo Canyon plant.... though
arguably it should already be there
after shutting down the San Onofre
   plant.

If "renewables" are so hot they're going to spread
like cellphones and conquer the planet tomorrow,
then what's the trouble with waiting for that to
happen first? Isn't it going to be Real Soon?
