If my air name is going to be "Mister Inbetween", what should the show name be? Maybe "Bright Gray".

This is by an ensemble of musicians who together play
the inside of a single piano. The sound they achieve
is very remarkable, and I recommend this on that basis
alone. But the compositions are pretty thin. Pretty,
but thin.

398 Golden Palominos Dead Inside Restless

The Golden Palominos have been on an amazing upward
trend of creativity for three albums now. Earlier, they
were there relatively early in the trip-hop stakes. Now
they've busted into new territory by combining Leonard
Cohen-style deadpan readings of tragedy with sparse,
isolationist creepy music. (Well, OK, maybe Cohen did
that too, but this is creepy for the 90s.) Nicole
Blackman is the author and reader of the text which
comprises the "lyrics". Read them in the booklet if you
please but do not underestimate the power of the human
voice reciting them out loud. Not for the easily upset.

The Cure - Inbetween Days - 07/85

Jim Infantino and jims big ego - Titanic

My favorite cranky,urban,self-mocking and cynical
folk-indie guy is back and only sometimes with a
band. Alot of live tracks that work well, since his
songs are mostly funny. A few great spoken word
pieces. Check it out. He is silly like Jonathin
Richman, but very 90's urban & not naive or sweet.

-- Kara W.

D 282 Scala (LP) Beauty Nowhere Touch

Three-quarters of Seefeel plus their producer in a bit
more rock-oriented setting. The beats are way heavier,
the vocals ever-so-slightly more up front, and the
songs shorter and more song structured. Check this out
and remember that it's on vinyl. By the way, despite
the appearance of Scala and Disjecta (the other quarter
of Seefeel), I read recently that Seefeel are still
"together". Yay!

304 Bryant, Dana Wishing from the Top Warner

Way cool word-jazz type spoken stuff over beatnik jazz
tunes. That describes a few of the tracks. Then there
are some good and some kinda lame songs. But the spoken
pieces are observant, trenchant, funny, and never
gratuitously manipulative. A nice surprise!

306 Cranes La Tragedie d'Oreste et Electre Dedicated

A bit of a departure from the BOMBAST+chirping
formula. Dealing with a French rendition of a Greek
tragedy here. Alison Shaw talks and sings in a normal
voice. The backing is portentous but not
overwhelming. This is not really a Cranes album so much
as a side project using the same name and personnel.

Oscar Brand Pie in The Sky

this is a very cool collection of satirical folk songs,
some ranging as far back as the revolutionary war.
many are based on traditional songs and the tunes are
used with new words. If you like Phil ochs, check this
out, these songs are where his came from....

W 299 Angelite and Huun-Huur-Tu Fly, Fly My Sadness Shanachie

Glenn says, "An incredible collaboration--one of the
best albums I've heard this year." Bulgarian women's
chorus Angelite and Tuvan throatcore group
Huun-Huur-Tu, plus Tuvan versions of fiddles, banjo,
and percussion. Gorgeous, haunting music.

W 300 COLL Vielle en France Silex

Attention drone-loving Francophiles: Excellent album of
traditional French hurdy-gurdy music, performed by
masters of that instrument.

> X 358 Hideki, Kato Hope & Despair Extreme

Mostly despair. An incredibly spare and dark album of
composed and improvised music from this Japanese
bassist. Zeena, Zorn and others mope along with him.

> X 360 Klucevsek, Guy Stolen Memories Tzadik

Somewhere in-between the serious compositions of "Flying
Vegetables of the Apocalypse" and the polka albums.

> 361 Peyroux, Madeleine Dreamland Atlantic

A very eclectic set of country-jazz-blues-cabaret
standards with an interesting set of backing musicians
(James Carter, Marc Ribot, Kenny Wolleson, Cyrus
Chestnut). Peyroux has a superb voice. I griped on my
review that she has too many Billie Holiday
affectations. And she does. But since then I've
learned that she's only 21 years old.

W 347 Viet Nam: Music of Hue Inedit

Excellent recording of centuries-old art and court
music from the city of Hue (port in central Viet
Nam). The art music is played by a small ensemble with
a female vocalist, three stringed instruments, and
wooden clappers. The court music is performed by a
large ensemble of stringed instruments, flutes, oboes,
gongs, and a variety of percussion. Both ensembles
include some of Viet Nam's best traditional musicians.
