First, on the 2100, switch to Unix SRM, It's in the advanced section of
your ARC console (2100 have ARC not Alphabios.)

Second, Update your Firmware with the 5.4 firmware CD or download updated
firmware from

http://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/

Third, Run the ECU floppy and configure everying on the EISA bus, If you
leave anything on EISA not configured it will fail.

Use a bootable floppy (ABOOT) and Generic Kernel, boot from SRM, Follow
instructions for the DS10 or 20 SRM Linux install.

http://www.digital.com/alphaserver/linux/install_guide.html
(with a grain of salt :^) ... use your device numbers not the ones in the
install guide, you also only need one swap file as the new kernals are not
limited to 128M..

2nd thoughts on RedHat is a good idea IMHO. RedHat 6.0 is -- not so
good an experience. At least it wasn't for me. I switched to SuSE 6.1
as fast as possible, i.e. I have it for some weeks now. The current
release is SuSE 6.1, but you get a voucher for a free 6.2 upgrade.

Some of the RedHat problems are there (like gs printer filters, and
the broken restore), but all in all it makes a much more stable
impression on me. E.g. my X desktop kept crashing all the time in
every RedHat version I tried, but doesn't with SuSE. YaST is
definitely less user friendly than linuxconf, but, for example, it
created a working sendmail.cf for a dial-in account by mouse click, as
opposed to RedHat's linuxconf. Hm. There's a quite working version of
Mozilla with it. Can't think of anything interesting right now. Feel
free to ask me if you want to know anything special :-)
