Was wondering if anyone knows of anywhere to download a template for basic
CD packaging design (just the insert and tray card kind of thing), for PC?
Any pointers would be helpful.......figure there must be some other DIYers
out there........
thanks!

CD templates? I have a few from different commercial printers, they all
require Quark XPress and a Mac. (or at least Quark) Let me know if they'll
work and I'll get them to you.

The adaptec easy cd creator burns cds (data & sound) and also comes with a cd
designer with some cheesy templates... it's pretty simple... but it works...
But if you are really looking to do anything like a commerical cd design /
high quality design, all you need are the inner dimensions of the cd... just
pull one apart and measure the paper goods and design away... On the mac
there are a number of leading products: adobe illustrator & quark express, and
microsoft has an illustrator ripoff for the pc called photo-draw. They'll all
let you enter in designs with exact dimensions...

well this gives me the opportunity to ask the group if
anyone has tried the cd duplicators that I just found and am
considering. One of the things that I like about them is
that they provide templates for cd cover design at the
following link:

http://www.oasiscd.com/music/FF_templates.html they provide
them in illustrator, quark or pagemaker or eps/photoshop
formats for either mac or pc.

I have not used them but am curious if anyone on the list
has. If anyone checks them out let me know how it works.
I found them by looking for recycled packaging, which they
offer several options for.

In my opinion, Windows users have only one choice for CD design: Sure
Thing (surething.com). It is an incredibly powerful program with some
drawing features that are as good as Illustrator. Plus it understands
the CD format so it can center things and wrap around, etc. You can
import things and work back and forth between Illustrator, Photoshop
and STCD, as it is clumsily called. It has all the main label sheets,
including 3-inch discs which I just did, plus background designs and
font layouts that accelerate the task. The help files are excellent
and the operation moderately intuitive. It has good printer
calibration which is a huge help in getting quick results.

Best of all, there is a fully functional 30-day trial download. After
that it won't print anymore. Don't tell anyone I told you that you
can still export the graphics to Illustrator and print from there.

PS I did my discs with Oasis a few years ago (and ended up on their
new age compilation, to boot) and the service was pretty good. I did
get samples of their various kinds of alternative packaging,
including the recycled one alluded to previously, and they were all
hideous. Flimsy, cheap-looking, unprofessional. Hope they have
upgraded those designs. But the conventional jewel case solution was
fine and they drop-shipped the discs to 6 or 7 locations without
complaining. However, I did my graphics here and even printed my own
film so that it was the way I wanted it before they got involved. I
think this is the best way, if you have the technology.
