Hi guys,

I want to host my site on my home computer over my DSL line (static IP
DSL through SBC Pacbell).

So I need a DNS service to point my domain name at my static IP
address. As usual it is a mess shopping for this on the Net,
a glut of ads and add-on garbage I don't want; I just want good DNS
service. A site that offers plain vanilla domain registration and DNS
service at a competitive rate would be perfect (maybe $10 - 20 a year
I think is competitive these days).

Any baluggers have DNS recommendation?

Run your own, and then have www.secondary.com pull records and
serve them to the net. For a small domain (or 5) it's 100% free. They're
based on Bind. There's also a couple guys out of palo alto that are
running a coop dns service, don't remember their url, but if you search
for my address and djbdns in the SVLUG archives it should pop up.

Use www.dyndns.org. A $30 lifetime donation buys you a nice web-based
interface to administer DNS.

Also, you can ditch the static IP. You really don't need it. With
dyndns.org you can have a dynamic IP and still have DNS work. It's
really quite cool.

Disclaimer: I have no affiliation other than as a very satisfied user.

Thanks Aaron.

I'm climbing a steep leaning curve, new to Linux and server computing.
Need to lean an MTA and the workings of the Python Mailman email list
package to move my lists from Yahoogroups to my server. Also moving a
few Web sites on board. All new to me. So I think I might want to put
off learning to do DNS myself for another project.

Thanks William! I will have a look at that.

I just found another free DNS service, "The Public DNS Service"
(http://www.granitecanyon.com). Anybody have experience with them?

Dreaming..
I was hoping to find a domain name registrar that would both register
my domain and provide DNS, at the US$ 10 - 15 per year price range, and
move all my domain registrations there. Register.com does that but
charges $35 per year per domain. It is probably worth it but for some
reason I don't want to pay that for each of my various domains :-).

..um, am I still dreaming :-)?

Only fairly old (> 1year old) experience. When I used them, they
were having major problems with the availability of their nameservers,
as well as synchronizing data with the master. This may have changed
since I used them.

IIRC, they host a news server with a few groups, where you could
lurk for a while to see what others are saying. When I was subscribed
to it, they seemed to have a fairly open posting policy (i.e., they
weren't cancelling posts which critiziced them).

You might check out godaddy.com. I think domains there at like $8.95
but I don't know about the DNS stuff.

I've been using joker.com for domain registration for the past couple of
years and have been quite happy with them. Their service includes hosting
DNS service, both primary and secondary. Everything is administered via
web browser. I think they cost around ~$10/year.

They're based out of Germany,so I originally had concerns about support,
but the one or two issues I had were resolved promptly via email.
