I'm shopping around for web-hosting services, and I was
wondering if anyone here knew of any that they liked.

My litmus tests are

   (1) do they provide linux shell accounts (freebsd would
   be okay).

   (2) do they let you run mod_perl apps.

They also get points for being

   (1) located in the SF area

   (2) having a wide range of deals you can select from,
e.g. something like a simple static site for $15/month,
       dynamic for $25, etc.

They lose points if they mention FrontPage or say that
they sell "solutions".

I was hoping I could just find an existing list someplace,
but http://perl.apache.org/isp.html is pretty clearly
incomplete, since it doesn't include
http://www.icestorm.com, which is one of the candidates I've
come up with by googling around.

	Talk to Daniel Sulley: daniel@electricrain.com

He hosts people on electricrain and is a full service
deal. Linux; perl, etc. I host www.gaijin.com and
	domains.gaijin.com there.

he.net I believe offers all that you mentioned.

I use PHP rather than mod_perl, as imho anyone with sense would. I've
looked at two-year-old PHP code and not scratched my head wondering
what I meant.

Depends on what you want/need. My needs are fairly simple and I've been
really happy with CSoft.net. Their accounts start at $5-10 per month and
go up from there.

You can choose between linux and bsd. No windows. They're pretty much
hands off -- they expect that you know what you're doing and as long as
you don't fsck anything up, they leave you alone. On the other hand,
every time that I've emailed them about something, they've always gotten
back to me in a few hours and have been really friendly.

However, their uptime leaves something to be desired, I think. 95 percent
of the time things are fine but their have been a couple of times that
I've tried to log in and haven't been able to. The worst was a few months
back; the server that my account was on was down for 2 or 3 days. But,
they gave everyone a free months worth of service. A related problem is
that their linux servers are on the 2.4 kernel -- so they keep having to
upgrade it. I'd prefer if they would have just stuck with a stable 2.2
kernel.

If you know your way around Unix and want a simple, no frills account,
I highly recommend CSoft. Good prices, great service.

Claude

p.s. A larger web-hosting company is Hurricane.net. I've had a lot of
people recommend them to me for larger projects. You may want to look
into them.
