I have tried typing on a Zaurus keyboard for a few minutes, and I can assure you it's not exactly Emacs-friendly. Here's a picture of the layout: http://www.lugod.org/presentations/zaurus-talk/pics/keypad.jpg Note the lack of Control, Escape, and Meta keys. Apparently, there is a way to connect a proper keyboard: http://www.nue.org/~yamazaki/keyboard/zaurus/ === From: Sergei Pokrovsky <pok@none.nowhere.invalid> Subject: Re: emacs and sharp zaurus Newsgroups: comp.emacs Date: Tue, 25 Nov 2003 17:08:50 +0600 Organization: Magistral Telecom JV. >>>>> "Friedolf" == Friedolf Lappen <friedolf.lappen@bamberg.de> writes: Friedolf> I am thinking about buying a sharp zaurus because Friedolf> I would like to have a portable emacs for sitting Friedolf> at the library or in the train and working on my Friedolf> thesis. Friedolf> Does anybody have any experiences with emacs on a Friedolf> zaurus or on another small engine? I do have eemacs (Ersatz Emacs, a clone of microemacs) on psion 5mx, and sometimes use it: http://dbrechalov.narod.ru/library/Soft4Psion/english.htm Its advantage is the familiar interface, but there is no elisp, so I cannot install my usual environment which I enjoy on both Sparc and w2k. But the main problem is the screen limitation. Plain text files often rely on 80 col width, and linewrap is ugly. To make all lines fit the screen one has to set a small font, which is not good for the eyes. That's one major situation where the rich text is preferable: in psion's epocWord I can easily zoom/unzoom, and the text is reformatted on the fly at no time at all. === From: mis6@pitt.edu (Michele Simionato) Subject: Re: emacs and sharp zaurus Newsgroups: comp.emacs Date: 25 Nov 2003 05:48:55 -0800 Organization: http://groups.google.com Friedolf Lappen <friedolf.lappen@bamberg.de> wrote in message news:<bpv9kg$1rg1mc$1@ID-211991.news.uni-berlin.de>... > I am thinking about buying a sharp zaurus because > I would like to have a portable emacs for sitting > at the library or in the train and working on my > thesis. > > Does anybody have any experiences with emacs on a > zaurus or on another small engine? > > Thanks in advance! Using emacs with the Zaurus keyboard is a nightmare: for the use you have in mind, buy a small laptop. The Zaurus is great, but it is not for typing long texts. === From: Markus Schaber <magguxnospam@gmx.de> Subject: Re: emacs and sharp zaurus Newsgroups: comp.emacs Date: Tue, 25 Nov 2003 21:45:51 +0100 Organization: T-Online Friedolf Lappen wrote: > I am thinking about buying a sharp zaurus because > I would like to have a portable emacs for sitting > at the library or in the train and working on my > thesis. > > Does anybody have any experiences with emacs on a > zaurus or on another small engine? first, you can compile a emacs for the Zaurus and it will run. But thats all of the good news. If tried it with a NFS-Share to have more space. And it run, but the display is to small, and the the keyboard isn't right for emacs. On the hardware-keyboard you haven't a CTRL and no META Key. and the screen-keyboard takes a lot of screen. greetings Markus PS sorry about my bad english ===
