Aaron, this looks more like the reported lpr problem, and
the same behaviour I had.  The fix is on the errata website,
under security -> lpr; and consists of adding the line:

   alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc

to /etc/conf.modules


You'll need to unload and reload  parport and lp modules. I assume a
reboot will do that.
