And there is calc. kai -- Be indiscrete. Do it continuously. My calculator was done exactly for that need - to calculate some quick stuff I found switching to a different buffer & evaluating inconvenient, and calc is indeed a wonderful thing, but it's the classic example of using a hand grenade to kill a fly.
