calc is not include in a default emacs

I'm using 2.02f, and have for some time, so there sure are newer
versions than 2.02c

You can do it in the *scratch* buffer or with M-:.
I like M-x ielm RET.  All of these expect Lisp expressions.

Then there is calculator.el by Eli Barzilay (I think).

And there is calc.

My calculator was done exactly for that need - to calculate some quick
stuff I found switching to a different buffer & evaluating
inconvenient, and calc is indeed a wonderful thing, but it's the
classic example of using a hand grenade to kill a fly.

You can get it from http://www.cs.cornell.edu/eli/misc/calculator.el,
and it is also part of Emacs 21 (when it's released).
