Subject: Re: Java for DBA From: "Michael Van" <vandycan@toad.net> Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 23:15:33 -0400 Aside from running the Annapolis Perl Mongers, I also run the Annapolis JUGerNaut (a Java user group). I've personally trained many Perl programmers in the Java way of doing things. Of course, Perl is always the best way to go, as Java is still immature as a programming language when compared to Perl. My suggestion is that you totally bone up on your OO skills if you want to go the way of the 'Bean'. Then find your local JUG group and learn from their experience. While the Annapolis JUG has extremely active certification groups in Java for both the basic and Developer levels, most do not. As a result of this, you may find that by networking with the Java gurus present at the group, you'll find someone to mentor you. If not, feel free to stop by my Java group (http://jugjug.cjb.net/ ) I am always a Perl afficianado at heart; however, the lasting trait of a modern programmer is not their expertise in a single language. Rather, it is their ability to program in many languages and choose the best one for a given job. Perl is the best language for database interaction in the web. However, Java's tie ins to CORBA for applications requiring middleware are hard to beat. I truly wish Perl had something that legitimately countered that.
