three options:
1) Your machine is overheated.
2) Your IDE cable is flaky or has been kicked off a drive
3) You've got a drive going bad (HD or CDROM)

I would check them in that order

I had the same hanging before. its possible that your sound card is not
configured, but your sound is enabled in enlightenment. Open enlightenment
configuration and disable sound.
