Point noted.  

As it happened, I used a number of information sources, most notably
Freshmeat and Sourceforge.  (There are some fascinating things on the
latter, even among the multitude of false hits I found.  Over 10,000
projects hosted -- good heavens!)

I could.  But that would really be a different kind of essay.

When one aims to make a point, it's usually wise to omit additional
points one _might_ make, in the name of simplicity:  One has to pick
one's battles.
