Anything that is NOT a WinPrinter AND which emulates any of the popular
printers (HP Laserjet 4, for example), will be supported.

While some USB printers work on the newest kernels, I wouldn't recommend
them yet. Still, I am seriously tempted to get an Epson 740i to match my
G3. Because I can. :)

I think those are cool, but they're not color afaik.

I have an Okipage 6e and it works fine. It's an LED printer, not
postscript, cost me all of $150, but also not color. However, unlike ink
jet printers, the ink doesn't smear. This was important to me. :)

I do not hold, btw, to PostScript snobbery. For one thing, I don't think
Adobe should have their legacy proprietary chokehold on the high-end
printer market. After my experience as a sysadmin with a 1mil
page-per-month duty cycle printer that used Ghostscript for its print
engine, I would rather pay GS folks than Adobe.

Frankly, it's funny how many people in open source run VRMS (Virtual RMS)
to make sure they have only open source software, but they will only buy
printers with legacy proprietary software from Adobe.

So I consider Ghostscript an entirely satisfactory (and more to my
theological bent) solution.

There's a supported printer database at:
http://gatekeeper.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi

You know, for a year or so, I relied on the guy who had ati.com to link to
ALL the companies with ATI in their name. However, he obviously sold out
to the video card company. :(

Anyhow, http://www.ati-usa.com/ is one company that makes
GhostScript-based printers. From my experience working with them when I
conulted for Honda, I think their customer service is really first-rate.

They don't really make printers suitable for home use as their *smallest*
printer has a duty cycle of 80k pages/month.

Heretic!

Oh, that's OK, then. Put away the kindling, guys.

Several companies make halfway-decent inkjet printers in that price
range that might be suitable, but somehow there's something reassuring
about the construction qualit of a few companies' laser printers.
'Course, there's also nothing like having PostScript/GhostScript
built in, but you're not going to do that for $350 except with a
refurbished LJ III w/ PS cartridge.

Subject: Anyone had success with Canon BJC 2000 printer (6.1)
From: Rick Forrester <rickf@crow.jpl.nasa.gov>
Date: Thu, 28 Oct 1999 14:16:32 -0700

Subject pretty much covers it. Have Canon BJC-2000 printer, no success
so far. D/L'd Ghostscript 5.5; had heard that the cbjc800.ppd driver
would work; didn't. Test print doesn't print at all.

Suggestions? Success stories?
