Subject: Re: 6.2 install hangs ... Found (remembered) the problem

Yesterday, I sent in reports relating to my problem loading 6.2 on a
DEC Prioris 5200XL machine. The installation hung and locked up keyboard
and mouse during loading of packages, even though this machine had been
running for RecHat 5.0 28 months without a hitch. I tried 2 6.2 custom
installs, a 6.2 Workstation install and a 6.1 custom install, all with the
same results.

Finally, I dredged a recollection out of the depths of my memory and
remembered that I had had a similar problem way back when I loaded 4.x onto
these machines (there are two of them configured identically for mail/DNS).
There seemed to be some problem with the SCSI CD drives causing hanging in
the installation process, but I vaguely remember that loading 5.0 worked
OK. Hey -- I'm lucky if I can remember 28 hours ago, let alone 28 months
ago! Since I only did package upgrades over the network after the initial
installation, I never used the CD and forgot about the problem.

Anyhow, I put the CD on another machine and did a network (NFS) install and
6.2 installed fine. I'm going to glue stickers onto those CD drives so the
problem isn't forgotten again.
