I'll differ strongly on the above. You _CAN_ remove 'news' But, first
you need to add a news entry and make it the default. After that 'news'
will be quite happy to disappear if you tell it to do so.

I no longer use NS, but I have it installed, have no 'news' entry in it
and have a news-related server in its place.

... this is only half the truth ... IIRC I had the same problem around
March this year ... but on another install (on RedHat 6.1):

... it works!! ... thanks a lot, Gordon ... I put 'news' at the end of
the line with the default domains in /etc/hosts, and the starts of
Netscape are now back to what they were before, i.e. the start-up
speed is OK.

I also installed new bind-stuff about an hour ago, but to no avail, as
it seems ...
only after the change in /etc/hosts Netscape started with about the
same speed as before in the last months.

... I'm my own admin here at home, and no, I didn't remove an entry in
/etc/hosts ... <shrug>

Thanks again, Gordon :) ... I'm glad this browser's OK again .. I need
it often.

No. In Netscape preferences (the window) under 'Newsgroup Servers' I
added news-server.kc.rr.com, made it the default, got rid of the
original 'news' entry that was there. That was the entry I was talking
about.

I didn't read the original post and don't know what effect this would
have on that problem. I was taking issue with the part of the reply that
said the original 'news' entry in netscape can't be removed. Of course
it can. I've been without it for years (except any time I do a
brand-stinkin'-new install: at that point I have the original useless
entry until I replace it with a real server entry and delete it).
