Thanks for the tip. I was booting into runlevel 5. I created a
~/.xsession. Now I have a .xinitrc and .xsession which are identical
and look exactly like:

#!/bin/sh

exec fvwm2

I still can't get rid of kde. When I set the default runlevel to 3, I
can issue 'startx' from the command line, and I go into fvwm2 like I
want. But I would like to go into fvwm2 from default runlevel 5. Are
there any other config files that need to be changed to get rid of kde?
I also noticed a ~/.xsession-errors which was modified after I created
the ~/.xsession. ~/.xsession-errors looks like this:

X Error of failed request: 86
Major opcode of failed request: 51 (X_SetFontPath)
Serial number of failed request: 9

There's no fvwm2 in the pull-down menu in the xdm login window. The
only choices I have are default, kde, gnome, and failsafe. I thought
default would do it, since fvwm2 is specified in both ~/.xinitrc and
~/.xsession. But default still gives me kde. Rats.

add fwm2 from the kde control center
you have options for adding new types of sessions

then it should work

Create an ~/.Xclients file, make it executable, and put your fvwm command
in it. Then you can use the Default session choice in xdm.

Switchdesk is the easiest way to change your default from
Gnome (or KDE) to FVWM2.

XFCE is also on the Redhat Powertools CD as an RPM file. It
works really well - speed is similar to FVWM2 but it's just
so much more aesthetic. Switchdesk doesn't (by default)
support XFCE. You can set XFCE as your default desktop by
creating a file .xinitrc in your home directory with the
single command "startxfce".

I've found that Kmail doesn't work well in either FVWM2 or
XFCE, so you might want to consider using Sylpheed instead.
