I just had a look at my /etc/hosts.allow and I have the following which may be useful: For every machine on my local sub-net that I want to be able to telnet to my Linux box I have: telnet: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where, obviously, the x's represent the ip address of the client wanting to telnet in. Don't know whether it's necessary, but I'm sure I put them in for a reason a year ago. === Subject: Re: telnet From: John Aldrich <john@chattanooga.net> Date: Mon, 22 May 2000 15:09:58 -0400 On Mon, 22 May 2000, Meghan Madel wrote: > Hello, > It is my understanding that telnet comes with all releases of Linux and > there is no installing or configuring that needs to be done. You need to make sure you have BOTH installed. Other than that, you also can't (as you probably know) telnet in as "root" for security reasons. You might consider looking at SSH anyway, as it's a secure telnet session, so to speak. John ===
