Unfortunately, there's no obvious way for tweakers like me to slip in different boot parameters on irregular occasions (e.g., single user mode to repair something before going multiuser). So I commented the "message=/boot/message" line out of lilo.conf. Of course, the GUI mode may be desirable if you want to insulate crafty (or clumsy) users from potential forks in the road. For me, it was a nuisance.
