This is a slightly different answer, but almost all DSL providers give you a
backup dialup account.
SBC may not give you a shell server, but if you go with Raw Bandwidth/Tsoft,
you do  get both (although I  have to admit  to never having used  the shell
service, since I have my own servers for that)
Switching to RB for DSL may end  up being cheaper than your current provider
+ a backup modem/shell server.

I'd like to second the recommendation - http://www.rawbandwidth.com
I got the Raw Bandwidth service in late September and it rocks my socks.
It's also refreshing to have an ISP that doesn't puke at the sight of
Linux too...

Agree. Raw Bandwidth service is excellent, they provide better support
than Pacbell for T-1 line in my experience. They support shell account
which I never used, primary or secondary DNS, news, time service, good
speed. Highly recommended.

I use their service since October 2000 and had only one downtime in the
last 6 months. Not sure why, but powercycle on the modem took care of it.
