The r* commands are not the security risk per se; the risk comes
in having your box open to r* connections, usually with the
/etc/rhosts file.

A good way to do this is to add/delete the rhosts file when
doing a backup.

You can also use ssh which encrypts the stuff over the wire.
I believe that ssh will work like r*; ie, with no password
intervention, although I have not tried it.
