As some mentioned, CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE will kill the X server,
CTRL-ALT-DELETE does the equivalent of "shutdown -r now".

But, in those situations where X is hosed enough that the keyboard is
toast, you are left with 2 options:

1) telnet/ssh to the machine from another machine and shut it down.

2) turn the machine off and on (which is bad bad bad, but sometimes you
have no choice with Intel machines).

I seem to remember a program that used a joystick to signal a shutdown as
well, for just those events where the keyboard was toast.

I can't tell you about the "how" right now (the Linux box being at
home...), but I can certainly tell you about the "what for".

My own Unix experience started on Sun Sparc stations and I was used to them for several years before I started using Linux on my PC. One thing I was *really*
missing on the PC were the extra modifier keys - the "diamond" or "Meta"
keys on the Sun keyboard. I use them (under Window Maker) for all window
manager navigation purposes and that way, the "Alt" key stays free for
use in applications. Very handy - and that's exactly why I like the
Windoze keys, as they can be used as "Meta" as well. As for the third
key: I haven't yet decided what to do with it, but I'll find
something... :-)

Now, if only I could find a decent *black* keyboard with those keys, I
might even consider getting rid of my old keyboard... ;-)
