  deeds create a kind of ritual impurity that we should want cleansed
  for our own peace of mind and good fortune.' Shinto also teaches to
  be pure and have a way with the gods. Shinto believes in the idea
  that to kill a living organism for one’s own benefit should be kept
  to a minimum. Purification is a critical factor of Shintoism."


For someone who believes in the germ theory of disease, there's a
potential contradiction there:  Purification means killing organisms.
