BEGSYLS

                                             March 9, 2019

There's a style of abbrievation where you
grab the first syllables of a phrase and
run them together into a new word:

"High fidelity" became "hi-fi"

"Science Fiction", in a jokey
allusion to that became "sci-fi". Many True Fans like
                                                to object to "sci-fi".
When I was at Stanford many years
ago, the kids were self-consciously Whatever.
over using this style, but they came
up with a number of useful ones: I like the reworking of
                                                     this as "skiffy"
   "Coffee House" => "coho" (sounds like "Skippy",
   "Frozen Yogurt" => "froyo" suggests basic consumer
                                                     product).

Most recently, I've noticed the fans of
korean dramas using this one:

   "Romantic Comedy" => "romcom".
