DISEASED_STORIES
May 05, 2018
Try this idea: we are afflicted by a disease of our fictions.
Stories can be used to rehearse problems,
to record solutions, to work through gaps
in understanding.
They can also be used to paper over the cracks,
to contrive a sense of justification without
any underlying reason.
This is not the high/low distinction:
arguably the high literary approach
is just showing different symptoms of
similar diseases.
Could you sketch out a set of rules
to fix these problems, to use the
way stories flow to carry you farther...
(Or would this run into the usual
problems with didactic intent and
rigid literary doctrine.)
