Modern research continues on the first usage of "punk rock",
and I'm glad to see that Ed Sanders himself now seems to
be winning with a 1970 usage now cited at wikipedia:
The first known use of the phrase "punk rock" appeared in
the Chicago Tribune on March 22, 1970, when Ed Sanders,
co-founder of New York's anarcho-prankster band the Fugs
described his first solo album as "punk rock – redneck
sentimentality".
Further it's nice to see Lester Bangs winning out again over
Dave Marsh, with an influential usage of "punk" (talking
about Iggy Pop)-- which the band "Suicide" picked up on --
though Marsh got to the full phrase "punk rock" in 1971
before Lester Bangs.
