        If I were going to try to "explain"
        World War I, my first stab at it would
        be to say that it has no explanation.

          World War I looks to me like a strange
          phenomena of nations caught up in a
          vortex of violent behavior for reasons
          barely understood by anyone.

            But rather than admit we're in the
            grip of meaningless chaos, we project
            explanations onto the blood stains.
