Remember that the members of the faculty really do
fight passionately about who will be faculty chair,
even if people who aren't members of that culture
can't fathom why they care.

Runners continue to race, though a motorcycle would
win every time.

A people like this might very well become interested
in interstellar exploration, in spite of the fact
that no one is going to be making a profit shipping
magnetic monopoles from Barnard's Star.
