GENDER_INVERSION

                                             March 7, 2018

  I've seen the claim on-line
that the trope for moe-blob BEWARE_OF_THE_BLOB
  girls can be gender inverted
  without any difficulty.

     They register as "sexless",
     they're just supposed to be
     nice, pathetic little creatures
that make you want to take care
     of them.

I don't doubt there are examples of "moe blob boys"
out there, and that they more-or-less work, but it
really isn't true that that changing the gender has
no effect-- a clumsy, pathetic boy typical comes off
as even *more* pathetic than a clumsy, pathetic girl.
The girls have low-expectations (courtesy of sexism)
which always provide a ready-made excuse

     In some respects, I suppose
     that might make male moe-blob
     boys work better...

Back in the days when I thought of myself
as a young, budding (if not moe) writer, I
toyed with the idea of writing a story with
           randomly assigned genders.

If you play around with this a bit, I think
you'll see why its a weak idea. Almost
anything you do is going to either go with or
against gender stereotype, and it will
           register differently in either case.

Even if you're going for a far-future SF
story set in a totally gender-blind
society, the *reader* is not gender-blind.
