     The "hero's journey" stuff sounds like
     a weak place to start-- you can end up
     writing some lame-ass quest fantasy if
     you don't watch out.

     My first thought is to disguise it by
     using social groups in place of the
     individuals in the formula.  A new
     culture splits off from the old, they
