MIKEY_TOM

   Back in the 90s, shortly before the web
   1.0 bubble really kicked-in a couple of
   fellows opened a medium-sized grocery
   store on Church Street, on the south
   side of Noe Valley.

   There are some things you need to do to get
   a new grocery to work in a place like Noe
   Valley and "Mikey Tom" completely nailed
   it: organic produce, espresso drinks,
   yuppie food ingredients.  The locals
   absolutely loved this place.


       Then the landlord got delusions of
       grandeur and was threatening to
       triple their rent, and-- presumably
       as intended by the landlord-- they
       announced they would go; though not
       quite without a fight:

       We were all signing petitions
       pledging that we would do a
       six-month long boycott of any
       new business that opened up in
       that location.

       The landlords ignored the threat,
       Mikey Tom's closed... and the space
       remained vacant for *many* years.
